Summary:
The international focus in “thinking green”, coupled with being economically creative has given rise to a tradition long abandoned in many households: the making and using of folk art as both individual expression and handmade gift giving.

Adaptations:
When students have been assessed for fine motor skills and able to use scissors/rotary cutter safely to cut a range of materials, they are encouraged to use the equipment at a more advance level with staff supervision.
Otherwise, every week a kit is provided with precut materials. The student is then able to choose and proceed at their own skill level with encouragement to focus and increase their proficiency in the identified skill.
This program is based in Scarborough, Ontario, and concentrates on providing handicrafts, beading projects, cooking , movement and spa related activities. In addition, Indian head massage is included with permission of the parent. This method of massage tends to relax the student and prepare them for work on deep breathing techniques. It also is a way for students to begin to feel and identify sensations in their bodies for personal growth and development.
This is not a full time program and is offered one day a week for students, so as to compliment an already existing program, volunteer placement and/or personal schedule. Most parents are now convinced having multiple experiences in programming assists community integration and provides for the meeting and developing of a broader network for new friendships.
Time: 9:30am-3pm (flexible)
